THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA (1941-42)

Vivien's revival of Shaw's play "The Doctor's Dilemma"

Written by: George Bernard Shaw

Directed: Irene Hentschell

Vivien's role: Jennifer Dubedat

Location: Theatre Royal Haymarket

Opened: Haymarket Theatre, London, March 4, 1942

Cast: Vivien Leigh (as Jennifer Dubedat), Cyril Cusack (later John Gielgud (as Louis Dubedat)), Austin Trevor (B.B.), Frank Allenby, Charles Goldner, George Relph, Morland Graham, John Tumbull, and Austin Trevor

On October 1941 Vivien wrote Leigh:
… And my performance is not quite such graceful one! Thank you for the criticisms of the play - they all quite right - and of course the sympathy must be with Dubedat - that is where Cyril lairs a bit, but he is such a good actor he will probably improve all the time. I speak slowly in the first act because I think it gives the weight and maturity Jennifer requires. …
Lots of love darling, Viv.
